Dr. Keyla Johnson

Hello! I am Dr. Keyla Johnson, the instructor for Teaching as a Profession at the 4C Academy. I have been in Education for 25 years in many capacities.

I am an alumna of Albany State University and obtained my Educational Doctorate from Argosy University in Sarasota, Florida. In addition, I hold a certification in Gifted Education and a Reading Endorsement seal. I have taught grades K-5 and 9-12, specifically in the areas of general education, Reading/ELA, Early Childhood Care and Education, and presently, Teaching as a Profession.

I have also been a full time and college adjunct instructor at Albany Technical College, Columbus Technical College, and Albany State University, all focused in the career field of Education. In the private sector, I have managed childcare centers for Bright Horizons a company that provides private childcare services for businesses and corporations including Procter and Gamble.

An outstanding moment in my career was in 2019 when I was nominated by my peers for Teacher of the Year at Commodore Conyers College and Career Academy.

Pathway Overview

The Teaching as a Profession Pathway is ideal for the student who wishes to become an educator, school administrator, counselor, media specialist, and some other related fields are speech language pathologist, child psychologist, school social worker, and paraprofessional.  Upon successful completion of the pathway requirements, students have the opportunity to earn credit for: EDUC 2110 - Investigating Critical and Contemporary Issues in Education at any University System of Georgia institution.

Preparing the next generation of teachers is essential and the Dougherty County School District would love to grow our own teachers from our current students.  As the numbers of veteran teachers approaching retirement increases, there will be an overwhelming demand for qualified teacher candidates.

Students who successfully complete the pathway may elect to further their understanding of pedagogy through the TAAP Paraprofessional Program.  This internal, work-based learning opportunity allows students in their Junior and Senior years to qualify and apply for internship opportunities within the school district’s elementary and secondary schools.

The Paraprofessional Program seeks to focus on giving potential education majors the forum to apply their learning. Student interns take on all of the responsibilities of a classroom:

  • Preparing lesson plans

  • Delivering materials

  • Working directly with students daily
