Dr. Keyla Johnson

Dr. Keyla Johnson is an accomplished educator with 30 years of experience in early childhood education and teacher instruction, currently serving as the Education as a Profession Instructor at Commodore Conyers College and Career Academy (4C Academy). A proud alumna of Albany State University, she earned her Educational Doctorate from Argosy University in Sarasota, Florida, and holds certifications in Gifted Education and a Reading Endorsement seal.

Since 2017, Dr. Johnson has been an Adjunct Professor delivering engaging lectures on teacher education and mentoring undergraduates in pedagogy. At 4C Academy, she designs innovative lesson plans in Education as a Profession, utilizing technology and diverse teaching strategies to inspire high school students. Her work in early childhood education includes teaching grades K-5 and managing Fortune 500 Company childcare centers for Bright Horizons, serving corporations like Procter and Gamble, where she fostered inclusive environments for young learners.

Dr. Johnson has also served as the Instructor at Albany Technical College and Columbus Technical College, focusing on education-related fields. In 2019, her peers nominated her for Teacher of the Year at 4C Academy, recognizing her dedication to student success. A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, and the National Black Child Development Institute, championing educational excellence and community engagement.  


Pathway Overview

9th/10th Grade

The Teaching as a Profession Pathway is ideal for the student who wishes to become an educator, school administrator, counselor, media specialist, and some other related fields are speech language pathologist, child psychologist, school social worker, and paraprofessional.  Upon successful completion of the pathway requirements, students have the opportunity to earn credit for: EDUC 2110 - Investigating Critical and Contemporary Issues in Education at any University System of Georgia institution.

Preparing the next generation of teachers is essential and the Dougherty County School District would love to grow our own teachers from our current students.  As the numbers of veteran teachers approaching retirement increases, there will be an overwhelming demand for qualified teacher candidates.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES - 11th/12th Grade

The 4C Academy has partnered with the Dougherty County School District to provide the Teaching as a Profession Paraprofessional Program.

 Students who successfully complete the pathway may elect to further their understanding of pedagogy through the TAAP Paraprofessional Program.  This internal, work-based learning opportunity allows students in their Junior and Senior years to qualify and apply for internship opportunities within the school district’s elementary and secondary schools.  

 The Paraprofessional Program seeks to focus on giving potential education majors the forum to apply their learning. Student interns take on all of the responsibilities of a classroom:

  • Preparing lesson plans

  • Delivering materials

  • Working directly with students daily
